From mosaic to logo to watermark

My first article in this, my blog "Zahngesundheit Bonn", begins with something technical. It is relevant to the practice, but it is not dental. Then again, perhaps this is the direction the blog will take: a little off-topic, all around the practice, with a pinch of dentistry. I hope you enjoy reading it, getting to know my practice and taking a small look behind the scenes of a dental surgery.

The logo in the entrance area caught my eye on my very first visit to my future practice back in 2022. It actually appears twice in the building: once right outside the front door and then a second time in the hallway, once you have entered the practice. I decided very quickly to adopt this striking and exceptionally beautiful pattern in the terrazzo floor, so characteristic of the building, as the logo for my practice. Over the years, however, cracks had formed in the floor and some of the mosaics were damaged. Working together with the Bonn heritage authority and the Nobis company (www.terrazzo-nobis.de) in Cologne, we were able to restore most of the affected areas. In conversation with Mr Nobis it turned out that the golden yellow shade was no longer available anywhere in Europe. A great shame, but it also means that the value and the significance of the terrazzo floor for the practice are all the greater.

The mosaic rosette has three colours: bordeaux red, blue-grey and golden yellow. Eight golden lilies and eight dots each encircle two offset squares set as a star, in bordeaux red and blue-grey. At the centre sits a rosette in blue-grey and golden yellow. The mosaic was adapted in collaboration with Louise Hörl (www.louisehoerl.com) and her team. The outer elements were left as they were; inside, however, the rosette was replaced by a golden tooth. A beige tone was chosen for the background.

Every time I see the logo I feel a real sense of pleasure, because it reminds me of the first steps towards becoming self-employed as a dentist. Important decisions had to be made back then, and they shape how the practice will look in the future. I am glad that I gave myself plenty of time for the practice branding. It took a considerable while before the colours and the concept for the Zahnarztpraxis Castell brand were ready, so that when we opened in April 2022 only the bare framework of the website was visible.

Taking one's time, making time, or rather not letting oneself be rushed, is a quality that also shows in the way I treat my patients. Many of my patients already know that they need to allow time when they come to me for treatment. And even though some understandably want to keep their stay at the dentist to a minimum, even a small treatment can take longer than expected, and careful planning for a larger procedure reduces the risk of mistakes many times over.

I hope you enjoyed my first article and that you will take pleasure in learning small details about our practice piece by piece, much like a mosaic. That way, over the coming years, you will be able to form an overall picture of my concept for your dental health.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to your continued reading. Until next time, and best wishes.
